Hurricane Sandy, Long Brach, New York City, New York Marathon

Tuesday, November 6, 2012: Hi Sam! I have some time before my plane lands in Long Beach. The trip to New York was amazing. There is a lot of work to do to bring the area back to normal. Hurricane Sandy wiped out entire towns. I saw homes smashed by trees that were literally uprooted and now fixtures in people’s living rooms. The subways were completely shut down. They are pumping water out of the tunnels that go under the river. It’s crazy. What makes New York special are the people. People are without electricity and heat, yet figure out a way to deal. They get shit done without complaining. There is a gasoline shortage there at present. Some gas stations are completely closed while others have lines of cars a miles long and takes 3+ hours to get gas. If they get any gas at all. New Yorkers are tough people. They do what they have to do and try not to let circumstance get in their way of living their lives. New York City did not shut down. It was inspiring to see.
